DAVAO CITY — A 5.0 magnitude earthquake struck early Wednesday off Kiamba town in Sarangani province, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The tremor of tectonic origin occurred at 1:04 a.m. with its epicenter traced at 25 kilometers southeast from the coast of Kiamba, the state seismic bureau said.

It had a focal depth of 60 kms.

Despite its significant depth, the temblor was registered at Intensity IV in Kiamba and T’boli, South Cotabato.

Intensity III was recorded in Koronadal City and the towns of Surallah, Banga, Tupi, and Lake Sebu in South Cotabato; Esperanza in Sultan Kudarat; Don Marcelino in Davao Occidental; and Maitum in Sarangani.

Meanwhile, seismographs recorded Intensity II in General Santos City and the towns of Norala and Tampakan in South Cotabato; and in Isulan and President Quirino in Sultan Kudarat. Intensity I was registered in Maasim, Sarangani.

The quake was followed by magnitude 4.5 and 4.2 aftershocks at 2:22 and 2:30 a.m., respectively.

No damage was expected, Phivolcs said.
