MANILA, Philippines — Pamalakaya, an activist fisherfolk group, decried Japan’s plan to dump radioactive wastewater into the Pacific Ocean, saying that it could affect the 13 million-hectare Benham Rise and the local fishing industry.

Ronnel Arambulo, Pamalakaya spokesperson, said the dumping of radioactive water could contaminate the ocean and lead to a wide-scale calamity for the fisherfolk communities.

“Countless fishers’ livelihood in the country would surely be jeopardized due to the release of hazardous chemicals into this vast body of water,” he said during a forum in Quezon City on Saturday.
