MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Immigration on Saturday said it has intercepted one male and three female victims of an illegal recruitment scheme at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3.
The four passengers confessed Tuesday that they had been recruited to work as telemarketers in a Cambodian online gaming company for a monthly salary of $800, the bureau said in a press release.
The BI acted upon receiving information from an anonymous source that revealed the details of the recruitment scheme.
The passengers were immediately turned over to the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking, the authority tasked with assisting the victims in taking legal action against the recruiters.
Immigration Commissioner Norman Tansingco enjoined the public to “exercise caution and vigilance against falling prey to deceptive recruitment schemes.”
“Beware of schemes that promise legitimate call center jobs but ultimately lead individuals into engaging in criminal activities abroad. It is crucial to verify the authenticity of job offers and protect one’s own interests,” Tansingco said.
“We are committed to safeguarding the rights and welfare of our fellow citizens,” he added.
