The government’s main antidrug agencies are studying whether to criminalize the recreational use of nitrous oxide, known as “happy gas” or “laughing gas,” to the country’s list of dangerous drugs.
In a joint statement on Friday, the Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB) and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) cautioned the public on the “unauthorized” use of the substance aside from its intended medical purpose.
Like in Europe and the United States, it is not yet illegal to possess or use nitrous oxide for recreational purposes, but it is a neurotoxin and excessive use can cause long-term neurological damage.
The Food and Drug Administration also classifies nitrous oxide as a prescribed medication, commonly used in hospitals and dental clinics as a form of anesthesia.
The DDB and PDEA issued the statement after the PNP suggested that it be added to the list of illegal drugs.
The DDB said it would take appropriate action if there was a law to reclassify, add to or remove from the list of dangerous drugs. —DEXTER V. CABALZA
