LUCENA CITY – A suspected robber was shot and killed Thursday when he allegedly resisted arrest and attacked the authorities in the island town of Burdeos in Quezon province.

Quezon police reported that Corporal Jeffry Lopez and a team of barangay tanod (village watchmen) went to Barangay Caniwan at 4 p.m. in response to the complaint of a villager that his “copra” was being stolen.

When the authorities arrived in the village, they caught Randy Velasco, 40, in the act of stealing copra.

But instead of surrendering, the report said Velasco repeatedly attacked Lopez and the tanods with a bolo despite several verbal warnings from the authorities.

Policemen shot the suspect on his feet, but Velasco continued his assault, which prompted Lopez to shoot his attacker in the body.

After the shooting, Lopez himself gave first aid to the suspect and brought him to the Rural Health Unit for treatment aboard an ambulance, but he was declared dead on arrival, the report said.

The local police were conducting further investigations. INQ
