MANILA, Philippines— Australia will supply drone technology and expertise to support the Philippine Coast Guard’s maritime patrol efforts.
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong announced the commitment during a press conference on Thursday alongside Department of Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo.
“We discussed today the ways in which we will enhance our cooperation. This includes Australia providing drone equipment, training, and other technology to strengthen your coast guard’s maritime domain awareness and protection capabilities,” she said.
“Australia is also sharing information and providing technical assistance for maritime legislators and government officials and working with you to increase your capacity to deal with illegal fishing in the maritime zone,” she added.

Wong said Australia is “discussing best pathways” to forward combined maritime activities with the Philippines, such as joint patrols.
“We are committed to continuing Australia’s longstanding presence in the region, including in the West Philippine Sea, and South China Sea. We are open to cooperating with all our partners to exercise freedom of navigation and of flight,” she said.
Her statement affirmed the statements previously made by Australian Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles during his February visit to the country.
Wong also noted planning for future joint training activities between Australia and the Philippines is “already underway,” while the month-long ‘Exercise Kasangga’ military drills between the two countries began on May 15, 2023.
“We are learning from you and you are learning from us,” commented Wong on the purpose of the activities.
