High chance of rain in Mindanao due to ITCZ, localized thunderstorms

MANILA, Philippines — The intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) will continue to affect Mindanao, bringing a high chance of rainfall in the area on Sunday, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

“ITCZ ang nakakaapekto sa malaking bahagi, or particular na dito sa may katimugang bahagi ng Mindanao,” reported weather specialist Obet Badrina in Pagasa’s Sunday forecast.

(The ITCZ will affect large parts of the area, particularly the southern parts of Mindanao.)

“Malaki rin ang posibilidad ng mga pulo-pulong pag-ulan, pagkidlat, at pagkulog sa bahagi naman ng Mindanao. Dulot yan ng mga localized thunderstorms at epekto na rin ng ITCZ,” he said later in the forecast.

(Chances of isolated rain, lightning, and thunder are also high in Mindanao. These are caused by localized thunderstorms and are also an effect of the ITCZ.)

Pagasa defines the ITCZ as the area in which winds from the Northern and Southern hemispheres meet.

Despite the chance of rain, the specialist said that Pagasa is not currently monitoring any low pressure areas, predicting a low chance of storms in the country.

Badrina also said that while clouds and isolated rain and thunderstorms are set to affect Mindanao from Sunday afternoon to nightfall, the rest of the country would be experiencing hot weather.

Hot temperatures will be felt in large parts of Luzon and Visayas, with chances of isolated rain, thunder, and lightning, according to the weather bureau.

No gale warnings were raised over any of the country’s seaboards.

The forecast temperature range in key cities/areas on Sunday will be:

Luzon

Visayas

Mindanao
