MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Eastern Visayas on Saturday said it is verifying the reported presence of red worms in Leyte’s Ormoc Bay, as claimed in a now-viral video circulating online.

According to the agency, a video showed “red worms or aquatic organisms” purportedly swimming in Ormoc Bay. A netizen asked: “Ano ito, uod o alien (What is this, a worm or an alien)?”

The video, posted on May 5 on the “Go Leyte” Facebook page, has so far garnered more than 6,800 views.

DENR Eastern Visayas Regional Public Affairs Officer Rowena Opiniano said that “they already saw and [are] now checking the viral video.”

It also said that local residents think the video is a mystery as they are uncertain where the alleged red worms were exactly spotted in the bay.

The DENR Eastern Visayas further disclosed that the regional office of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources has already been deployed to inspect the bay.
