Pagasa: Parts of Luzon to experience rain but hot weather will still prevail

MANILA, Philippines — The convergence of easterlies and north easterlies is set to bring rain over a large area of Luzon this Thursday morning but sweltering temperatures will still persist in the country, the state weather service said.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), warm air is expected to peak at 35°C in several parts of the country Thursday, May 11, with Metro Manila possibly experiencing heat index up to 40°C.

“Ngayong umaga po sa malaking bahagi ng Luzon, asahan na ang mga pag-ulan dulot ng pagsalubong ng easterlies and northeasterlies. Kabilang na diyan ang malaking bahagi ng Bicol Region, gayundin sa mga probinsya ng Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Quezon, and even Aurora province,” Pagasa weather specialist Benison Estareja said during Thursday’s early morning report.

(This morning, a large part of Luzon is expected to experience rain caused by the meeting of easterlies and northeasterlies. That includes a large part of the Bicol Region, as well as the provinces of Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Quezon, and even Aurora province.)

Estareja added that Samar provinces may also see rain showers, as moderately cloudy to cloudy skies is predicted in most of Luzon with chances of rain over parts of Calabarzon and Central Luzon.

Pagasa also said that temperatures may intensify in Luzon, including Metro Manila, by Thursday noon. The highest predicted air temperature in the country on Thursday is 35°C in Laoag City, Tuguegarao, Zamboanga City, and Davao City, based on Estareja’s report.

Mimaropa – especially Northern Palawan – can expect rain due to localized thunderstorms while Cordillera and Cagayan Valley can anticipate the same from afternoon to nightfall, he added.

Similarly, in Visayas, Pagasa said rain from localized thunderstorms may hit Samar provinces, Biliran, Aklan, and Capiz, while heat of up to 32°C is expected in Cebu, Iloilo, and Tacloban by Thursday noon.

The weather authority likewise said in its forecast for May 11 that moderately cloudy to cloudy skies with chances of rain may occur especially in Eastern Visayas, Panay Island, Northern Negros, and Northern Cebu.

As for Mindanao, Pagasa said the region can expect fair weather conditions on Thursday despite localized thunderstorms likely interrupting an otherwise cloudy skies by afternoon in Central and Southern Mindanao, particularly Soccsksargen, Maguindanao, Cotabato City, Lanao del Sur, and southern parts of Bukidnon.

Zamboanga Peninsula, Caraga, and Davao Region can also expect isolated rain showers from Thursday afternoon until evening, the state weather bureau noted.

Estareja, however, clarified that the occurrence of rain is not indicative of a storm or low-pressure area.
