MANILA, Philippines — Around 56 percent of Filipinos have registered their subscriber identity module (SIM) cards a month before the government’s first deadline on April 26, according to a survey conducted by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) from March 26 to 29.

According to the survey, 56 percent of local SIM card holders had already registered, while the remaining 44 percent still needed to do it.

SWS said it conducted face-to-face interviews with 1,200 adults (18 years old and above) nationwide – 300 each in Metro Manila, Balance Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

Based on the report, 72 percent of respondents found the SIM card registration process “somewhat or very easy” is 72 percent, while 28 percent considered it “somewhat or very hard”

Among the participants, 73 percent own at least one mobile phone — 94 percent own one cell phone, 5 percent own two, and 1 percent have three to four.

Eighty percent of these cell phone owners use one SIM card, 18 percent use two, and 1 percent use either three or four SIM cards, while the remaining 1 percent did not answer.

The national government encouraged mobile phone service subscribers to have their SIM cards registered after Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla announced last April 25 that the registration of SIM cards would be extended for another 90 days until July 25, 2023.
