MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Grace Poe on Sunday urged locals who have yet to register their subscriber identity modules (SIMs) to do so with only three remaining days before the Department of Information and Communications Technology’s (DICT) imposed deadline on April 26.

According to DICT, out of 168 million SIM cards in use, only 73.03 million (43.47 percent) were registered as of April 17.

“Let’s spread the word that all must enlist their SIM for their protection and peace of mind,” Poe said in a statement.

Poe reiterated that the move would secure and protect locals’ information and data.

“The government and telcos should go all out to encourage our countrymen to register. This should be matched with a fortified infrastructure to handle the gush of transactions from those who will sign up for their SIM.

Of the 73.03 million majority of registration were from Smart users with 36.11, followed by Globe with 31.59 million and DITO with 5.33 million, while over 95 million remained unregistered.

On April 19, DICT announced that it would not extend the SIM card registration despite various groups’ calls for an extension. Unregistered SIM cards will be deactivated on April 26, based on Republic Act 11934 or the SIM Registration Law.
