MANILA, Philippines — A record-high 89% of Filipinos are satisfied with the way democracy works in the Philippines, according to a survey conducted by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) for the fourth quarter of 2022.
This figure is 11 percent higher than the 78% in April 2021 and tops the previous record of 86% in September 2016.
SWS discussed in a recent report that satisfaction with the way democracy works is heavily correlated to national elections in the country.
“Satisfaction with the way democracy works had peaks of 70% in September 1992, 70% in July 1998, 69% in September 2010, 86% in September 2016, and the current record of 89% in December 2022, related to the successful presidential elections of 1992, 1998, 2010, 2016, and 2022, respectively,” reported the research body.
SWS also reported that two-thirds (60%) of Filipinos would choose democracy over other forms of government, but 26% would prefer authoritarianism in some circumstances.
Only 15% of Filipinos said that it personally “does not matter whether we have a democratic or a non-democratic regime.”
The Fourth Quarter 2022 survey was conducted from December 10-14. According to SWS, 1,200 adults were interviewed, 300 each from Metro Manila, Balance Luzon (or Luzon outside Metro Manila), Visayas, and Mindanao.
It reported sampling error margins of ±2.8% for national percentages, ±5.7% each for Metro Manila, Balance Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
