Pagasa warns: Tropical Depression Amang may spike dam water levels

/ 05:33 PM April 11, 2023

Continuous rains expected to be brought by Tropical Depression Amang may cause water levels in dams to rise, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said on Tuesday.

MANILA, Philippines — Tropical Depression Amang’s continuous rains may raise dam water levels, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said on Tuesday.

Pagasa raised Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal Number 1 in some Eastern Visayas and Bicol Region areas. Tropical Depression Amang is moving northwest of the country and is expected to hit Metro Manila.

Tropical Depression Among will affect water levels of dams supplying water to Metro Manila, Pagasa weather specialist Daniel Villamil said in a briefing.

“By Huwebes hanggang Biyernes makakaranas po tayo ng mga kaulapan at pagulan na dala netong si Amang. So by that time po posibleng tumaas ang mga level ng ating mga dams dahil may mga pagulan po tayong mararanasan,” Villamil said.

(By Thursday until Friday, we are expecting rains brought by Amang. By that time, dam water levels may rise due to rains.)

Villamil also warned the public against flash floods, landslides, and overflowing bodies of water brought by Tropical Depression Among.

“Maging alerto at handa po tayo sa mga banta ng biglaang pagbaha o pagguho ng lupa, posible rin po kasi ang pag-apaw ng ating mga ilog at dalampasigan lalong-lalo na kung tuloy tuloy ang pagulan na mararanasan.” Villamil added.

(Be alert and prepared for sudden floods and landslides. It is possible that rivers and beaches overflow due to continuous rains.)

Pagasa also declared other provinces under Signal No. 1 at 11 a.m. on Tuesday.
