384 passengers stranded in Albay port as TD Amang threatens Bicol

A 21-year-old woman drowned while swimming in a river in Sto. Domingo town in Albay on Easter Sunday, April 9.

VIRAC, Catanduanes — At least 384 passengers bound for Catanduanes were stranded in the port of Tabaco town in Albay province after sea trips were suspended on Tuesday, April 11, due to Tropical Depression Amang.

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG)-Catanduanes said 38 rolling cargoes were also stranded in Tabaco port.

PCG-Catanduanes added that 70 passengers and 15 rolling cargoes were also prevented from leaving the San Andres port in Catanduanes.

The local government of Catanduanes immediately provided food packs to the stranded passengers.

In its 11 a.m. tropical cyclone bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said at 10 a.m. that the center of Amang was 270 km east of Virac town, Catanduanes with maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center, and gustiness of up to 70 kph.

Catanduanes Governor Joseph Cua reminded residents in coastal and landslide-prone areas to be on alert and take precautionary measures due to the inclement weather.

“To those in the coastal barangays in Catanduanes, the fisherfolk, and those in landslide-prone areas, please be careful,” Cua said. “Always check updates through the radio, television, and social media so that we can be prepared in case the typhoon strengthens so that we can avoid casualties.”

Cua added that the provincial government had prepositioned goods and deployed emergency equipment, specifically in landslide-prone areas to avoid isolation if the weather disturbance worsened.
