SETTLERS  and those doing business near the Kawasan Falls in Badian town, southern Cebu, have until April 15 to clear out or their houses and structures will be  demolished.

Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia  who announced the deadline said she ordered the Provincial Engineering Office to remove the structures which are ruining the scenic view of the falls.

“This is illegal . . .  We  informed the settlers two years ago . . . We would like to preserve the pristine beauty of this God-given gift,” she told reporters.

At least 44 illegal structures were built around the Kawasan Falls.

Some were erected in the  1970s  and underwent improvements, said Asst. Provincial Engineer Eulogio Pelayre.

There are four permanent structures in the area, three semi-permanent structures made of mixed materials and 37 temporary structures made from indigenous materials.

Most of them are cottages and kiosks found on the first level of the Kawasan Falls.

Cottages are also found on the second level of the falls with other structures on  third level where the main source of water is located.

Governor Garcia said these structures are a manifestation of “crass commercialism” that has no regard for nature and the environment.

“Tourists don’t come there to buy but to see for themselves the beauty of the falls,” she said in Cebuano.
