MANILA, Philippines — A total of 72 deaths due drowning were reported and recorded nationwide during the Holy Week,  Philippine National Police (PNP) spokesperson Col. Jean Fajardo told on Monday.

Fajardo, in a text message, said this was the latest tally recorded by the PNP as of Sunday, 6 pm.

Hence, PNP chief Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr. reminded the public, especially parents and guardians, be more careful and  vigilant.

“To all parents,  please do not leave your children unattended and avoid drinking liquor while swimming to avoid cases of drowning,” Azurin  said in a statement.

The PNP also recorded 11 vehicular accidents that resulted in four deaths in the Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, and Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon).

A large number of Filipinos trooped to the provinces and vacation destinations during the long Holy Week break.
