MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Sunday urged Filipinos to re-examine their values and speak out against discrimination in order to honor the lives of their forebears who sacrificed themselves for freedom and democracy as the nation prepares for the commemoration of Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor).

Officially, the celebration of  Araw ng Kagitingan, is on April 9, but since it falls on Easter Sunday this year, the government moved the commemoration to Monday, April 10.

Marcos said Filipinos must honor those who gave their lives in pursuit of democracy and freedom.

“We may also re-examine our values and honor their lives by speaking up against discrimination, extending help to those in need, and working towards a better future,” he said.

“May we also learn to make wise and sound decisions so that we may address our country’s pressing problems with compassion and concern for others,” Marcos added.

Marcos said that the Day of Valor is proof of Filipinos’ “indomitable spirit,” despite numerous challenges.

“Defined by our feats rather than our trials, we have emerged as a nation that stands tall and proud, guided by the principles of justice, truth and democracy,” Marcos explained.

“We have staunchly proven time and again that we are never the same after each adversity for we always rise to meet every challenge head-on with grit, grace and determination,” he added.

He also reminded Filipinos how the public’s actions can determine the future of the country, including the succeeding generations.

“Together, let us strive towards developing a more humane, fair, and progressive society that allows our citizenry to relish their liberty and achieve their individual and collective aspirations,” Marcos said.
