MANILA, Philippines — The low – pressure area (LPA) east of Mindanao has a slim chance of intensifying into a tropical cyclone within the next 24 hours, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said on Saturday.

The LPA was last spotted some 1,455 kilometers east of northeastern Mindanao, outside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR), said the state weather bureau.

“Ito’y nasa labas pa rin ng PAR sa ngayon at mababa pa rin ang tsansa maging bagyo in the next 24 hours ngunit hindi natin ina-alis yung possibility na maging bagyo ito sa susunod pang mga araw,” said Pagasa weather forecaster Patrick Del Mundo.

(The LPA is still outside PAR and has a slim chance of turning into a storm in the next 24 hours. It ay, however, still intensify into one in the coming days.)

Sunday entry

Del Mundo added that the LPA is expected to enter PAR on Sunday, but is not forecast to have a direct impact on Philippine landmass.

The LPA’s trough or extension, however, is expected to bring cloudy skies and rain showers to Eastern Visayas, Sorsogon, Masbate, Surigao del Norte, and Dinagat Islands, according to Pagasa.

Meanwhile, Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela and Apayao can expect cloudy skies and rain due to the northeasterly surface wind flow.

Gale warning

Hence, Pagasa has raised a gale warning over Batanes, Cagayan and the Babuyan Islands, Isabela, Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur.

Fisherfolk and those with small vessels are advised against setting sail due to rough sea conditions.
