2 persons charged for stealing from victim of road crash in Davao del Sur

DIGOS CITY, Davao del Sur – Two bystanders rushed to the scene of a road crash along the Digos-Makar highway here last April 1 but instead of helping the victim, they stole his motorcycle and a mobile phone.

On Monday, the police filed carnapping and theft charges against Cosme Bawa, 28, and Reyjay Galagar, 40, before the City Prosecutor’s Office here.

Lt. Colonel Hamlet Lerios, Digos police chief, said the suspects are under the station’s custody while awaiting an order committing them to a detention facility.

Reports said Evan Clark Areno, 20, of Hagonoy, Davao del Sur, was traveling along the highway in road Barangay San Jose here when his motorcycle swerved and crashed into the shoulder of the road at about 3:30 a.m. of April 1.

A police report said that patrolling civilian peace volunteers saw Areno’s motorcycle being stolen from him hence they gave the suspects a chase, leading to the recovery of his belongings and the arrest of Bawa and Galagar.
