GAMU, Isabela — Four high-powered firearms were unearthed on Monday in the hinterland of Baggao town with the help of two former communist rebels, the military said on Tuesday, April 4.
In an interview, Army Major Rigor Pamittan, 5th Infantry Division spokesperson and public affairs chief, said the arms cache was discovered in Sitio Regaay, Barangay Hacienda Intal.
Pamittan said former rebels, identified only as “Ka Eren” and “Ka Armin,” were forced to hide the guns in the area after previous firefights with government soldiers.
Government troops belonging to the 17th Infantry Battalion under the 501st Infantry Brigade found two Bushmaster rifles, two M-16 Armalite rifles, and assorted bullets in the area.
The guns were brought to the 501st Infantry Brigade headquarters in Magapit, Lal-lo, Cagayan for safekeeping, while the former rebels were debriefed and registered with the government’s program to get assistance for rebel returnees. INQ
