LAOAG CITY, Ilocos Norte — A magnitude 5.1 earthquake jolted Ilocos Norte province Tuesday afternoon (March 28), according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
State seismologists said the tremor’s epicenter was 56 kilometers northwest of Burgos town. The quake struck at around 1:51 p.m., Phivolcs added.
The earthquake was tectonic in origin and had a depth of focus of 12 km, said Phivolcs.
The agency noted the following intensities felt in the areas:
- Intensity IV- Pagudpud, Bangui, Sarrat, San Nicolas, Pasuquin, Bacarra, City of Laoag, Carasi, Burgos, and City of Batac, Ilocos Norte
- Intensity III – Paoay, Ilocos Norte
- Intensity II – Pinili, and Marcos, Ilocos Norte
- Intensity I – Sinait, Ilocos Sur
Instrumental intensities were also recorded in the following areas:
- Intensity III – Batac, Pasuquin, and City of Laoag, Ilocos Norte
- Intensity I – Sinait, Ilocos Sur
Felt intensity is the ground shaking actually felt and reported by the people through the Phivolcs Earthquake Intensity Scale, while instrumental intensity was indicated by the ground shaking intensity measured by the intensity meters in and around the epicentral area.
