MANILA, Philippines — Immigration authorities have arrested a Chinese national who had allegedly attempted to leave the country with spurious documents.

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) on Tuesday said a certain Ning Haochao, 24, was nabbed by the border control and intelligence unit at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 before he boarded a plane bound for Xiamen, China, on March 24.

“He was offloaded from his flight after BI officers confirmed that the emigration clearance certificate (ECC) purportedly issued by the bureau, which he presented, is counterfeit,” BI said in a statement.

According to the bureau, Ning was also on the BI’s blacklist of foreign nationals who have overstayed their tourist visas.

BI chief Norman Tansingco said it was “evident” Ning presented a sham ECC to dodge the immigration fines and penalties.

He also noted that Ning’s arrest should be a stern warning to overstaying foreign nationals.

Immigration officers will leave no stone unturned to detect bogus documents of passengers, Tansingco added.

Ning, currently detained at the BI detention center in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City, pending deportation, will remain on the BI blacklist, permanently banning him from re-entering the Philippines.
