MANILA, Philippines — Over 10,000 liters of oil and water mixture were collected during the offshore clean-up operations following an oil spill that began in Oriental Mindoro, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said on Tuesday.
Aside from the 10,613 liters of oily water mixture, the PCG also collected 123 sacks of oil-contaminated materials in offshore operations, while 3,644.5 sacks and 22 drums of waste were collected during shoreline cleanup from March 1 to March 27.
An oil spill ensued after MT Princess Empress, which carried 800,000 liters of industrial fuel oil, sank on February 28, in Naujan, Oriental Mindoro, after having engine trouble due to rough sea conditions.
The spillage reached as far as Verde Island in Batangas, and Taytay town in Palawan.—MJ Soriano, INQUIRER.net trainee
