Casimero’s title defense postponed to June 24

SGG Promotions head Samson “Don King” Gello-ani decided to move the title defense of IBF world light flyweight champion Johnriel Casimero against Mexican Sammy “Gutty” Guttierez to June 24 at the Pacific Grand Ball Room of the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino.

The bout was originally slated May 13 but was moved due to a conflict with the fight of Brian Viloria against Omar Niño at the Ynares Sports Arena in Antipolo City.

The WBO world flyweight title defense of Viloria against Niño was also moved from April 21 to May 13.

“Due to Solar Entertainment’s decision to move Viloria’s fight from April 21 to May 13, our scheduled televised coverage of Casimero’s bout will be greatly affected. So we are forced to move Casimero’s fight to June,” said Gello-ani.

Casimero’s bout will be aired live over AKTV Channel 13.

“We are also doing this for the good of our promotions and also for the boxing fans.”

Casimero’s title defense against Guttierez is considered to be one of the most awaited boxing fights in the country this year. Gello-ani is also expected to bring in an Argentinean boxer to fight former world champion Marvin “Marvelous” Sonsona.

Ironically, Gello-ani, Casimero (16 wins, 2 losses, 10 knockouts) and trainer Christopher Tepora were attacked by angry Argentinean boxing fans during Casimero’s win of the IBF world flyweight belt against Luis Alberto Lazarte in Argentina.

Guttierez (31-7, 21 KOs) is the current WBC silver lightflyweight champion, a former WBA interim world minimumweight champion and Mexico minimumweight champion. He clinched the WBC silver lightflyweight belt against fellow Mexican Roilo Golez.
