KORONADAL CITY — Five local government units (LGUs) in South Cotabato fully suspended classes at all levels Tuesday while another town only suspended classes in some of its barangays because of bad weather brought about by a low-pressure area (LPA) prevailing in some parts of Mindanao.
Mayors Leonard Escobillo of Tampakan town, Romeo Tamayo of Tupi, Bernie Palencia of Polomolok, Pedro Matinong, Jr. of Surallah and Floro Gandam Lake Sebu ordered the full cancellation of classes in their respective areas to ensure the safety of students and their teachers.
Mayor Keo Dayle Tuan of T’boli town, however, only canceled classes in nine of the town’s 25 villages.
Incessant rainfalls brought by the LPA were recorded in these localities, according to the LGUs’ advisories.
South Cotabato, a landlocked province in the Soccsksargen region, is composed of the component Koronadal City and 10 towns.
As of 3 a.m. Tuesday, the LPA was spotted 340 kilometers (km) southeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur or 320 km east-southeast of Davao City, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.
Light to moderate rainfall was to be expected on Tuesday in Soccsksargen that could cause possible flashfloods, the state weather forecaster warned.
