LUCENA CITY — Malacañang has declared March 22 as a special non-working day in Cavite province to mark the 154th birth anniversary of the first Philippine president, General Emilio Aguinaldo.
“It is but fitting and proper that the people of the province of Cavite be given full opportunity to celebrate and participate in the occasion with appropriate ceremonies,” Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin stated in Proclamation No. 176 issued on March 3.
A copy of the proclamation was posted on the Facebook page of the Cavite Provincial Information Office on Monday, March 6.
Aguinaldo, one of the revolutionary leaders during the Spanish occupation, was born on March 22, 1869 in Kawit town.
He died of a heart attack at the Veterans Memorial Hospital in Quezon City on Feb. 6, 1964, at the age of 94.
On Feb. 16, Aguinaldo was buried in the garden of his home in Kawit.
A year before his death, on June 12, 1963, at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila, Aguinaldo donated to the government his historic mansion in Kawit, where Philippine independence was proclaimed in 1898.
