2 dead in road accidents in Batangas

LUCENA CITY — A motorcyclist and a back-rider died early Sunday, March 5, in separate road accidents in Batangas province.

Randolph Manalo, 26, was traveling along Barangay (village) Pallocan West in Batangas City at around 1:45 a.m. when he suddenly lost control of his motorcycle.

The wayward vehicle consequently crashed into the concrete fence of the Calumpang bridge, throwing off Manalo who hit his head on the pavement. He died while being taken to Golden Gate General Hospital in the city.

Meanwhile, in Nasugbu town, pillion rider Alwayn June Boteros died after a truck hit the motorcycle he was riding in Barangay 11 at around 2:40 a.m.

Rescuers took Boteros and motorcycle driver, David Israel Cabrera, 26, to the hospital, but the former died on the way.

The report said the truck driver, George Mala-ay, occupied the opposite lane and collided with the oncoming motorcycle.

The report said both motorcycle riders tested positive for alcoholic intoxication.

The police said the concerned parties were open to an amicable settlement.

The report did not state whether or not the fatalities in the two accidents were wearing crash helmets, which is required by the Motorcycle Helmet Act of 2009.
