MANILA, Philippines — Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla on Wednesday ordered the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to conduct a parallel investigation on the death of Adamson University third-year chemical engineering student John Matthew Salilig.
Justice Assistant Secretary and spokesperson Jose Dominic Clavano said Remulla issued the directive while attending the 52nd United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) session.
“The Secretary has already asked the NBI to conduct a parallel probe into the alleged hazing death. We hope to shed [light] on this issue,” Clavano told reporters.
Salilig’s body was found in an open field in Imus town, Cavite province, days after he was reported missing on February 18.

Initial findings by the police showed that his body bore marks of hazing.
“The Department condemns any violation of Republic Act 11053 or the Anti-Hazing Law. However, we will await any case that will be filed before our prosecutors. Rest assured, any forthcoming case will undergo diligent evaluation. If probable cause with reasonable certainty of conviction is found, we will prosecute the case until the perpetrators of this crime are finally brought to justice,” Clavano added.
