LEGAZPI CITY — Classes in Palanas town in Masbate provincd were suspended on Tuesday (Feb. 28) due to floods triggered by the continuous rain brought by the northeast monsoon.
In a social media post by the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) – Palanas, classes at all levels in both public and private schools were declared suspended “until lifted” due to inclement weather.
Ace Abejuela, an MDRRMO-Palanas responder, also posted on social media that their team conducted monitoring of the water levels in rivers as heavy rainfall flooded some town areas.
Reports said a river in Sitio (sub-village) Tan-ag in Barangay (village) Poblacion overflowed while the water level at Sitio Langka in Barangay Sta. Cruz towards Masbate Spillway has reached waist-high, making it difficult for responders to pass through the bridge.
Earlier, MDRRMO-Palanas responders assisted Kasalang Bayan (mass wedding) attendees from the Holy Name of Jesus Parish Church to cross the raging Umawas River in Barangay Malibas after rains caused it to swell.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration – Masbate had previously notified the towns on the possibility of flash floods or landslides caused by moderate to heavy rains. Franshey Mae Drio, Inquirer contributor
