MANILA, Philippines — Eight suspected human trafficking victims who were supposed to enter Malaysia were recently rescued in Tawi-Tawi province, the Philippine Navy said on Friday.

Authorities rescued the victims — four males and four females — in MV Trisha Kerstin II at the Port of Bongao last February 18.

The victims from Zamboanga City traveled to Tawi-Tawi, then attempted to proceed to Sandakan, Sabah, without proper documentation from the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration.

They were then transported to the Tawi-Tawi Maritime Police Station for documentation and profiling. They were turned over to the Ministry of Social Welfare and Development Office in Bongao for counseling and other legal processing.—Denver Godezano, INQUIRER.net trainee
