TUGUEGARAO CITY — A Philippine hawk-eagle that was entangled in a fishing net was rescued Thursday in Claveria town, Cagayan province.
In an interview, Claveria Mayor Lucille Angelus Guillen-Yapo said fisherman Felipe Burigsay Sr. was inspecting his net in the river in Barangay Mabnang when he saw the eagle stuck in it.
Citing a report from Burigsay, Yapo said the eagle tried to prey on a carp inside the net.
The rescued animal was immediately turned over to the Claveria environment and natural resources office.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) said the Philippine hawk-eagle is a bird of prey that is endemic to the Philippines,
Locally known as “lawin,” the Philippine hawk-eagle is considered endangered due to the loss of its habitat, the DENR said.
Catching, killing, and selling endangered types of birds are “strictly prohibited” under the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act. (Republic Act 9147). INQ
