Magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck Davao Occidental town

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck off Sarangani town in Davao Occidental on Friday, state seismologists said.

The tectonic tremor occurred 377 kilometers southeast of Sarangani at around 4:51am with a depth of 114 kilometers, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

The temblor is not expected to cause damage and aftershocks are unlikely.

The following areas reported instrumental intensities:

Intensity II: Glan, Kiamba, Sarangani; Tupi, South Cotabato
Intensity I: Don Marcelino, Davao Occidental; Maitum, Malapatan, Sarangani; Koronadal City, General Santos City, South Cotabato

No felt intensities were reported to Phivolcs.

Felt intensity is the ground shaking actually felt and reported by the people through the Phivolcs Earthquake Intensity Scale, while instrumental intensity was indicated by the ground shaking intensity measured by the intensity meters in and around the epicentral area.
