MANILA, Philippines — Deputy Speaker and Las Pinas City Rep. Camille Villar said on Thursday that a bill seeking to create a Virology Science and Technology Institute of the Philippines (VIP) will encourage more scientists to return to the country.
Once passed into law, House Bill 6542 would respond to emerging illnesses and protect the public in future pandemics, said Villar.
“We hope that our brilliant Filipino scientists, researchers and fellows will return to the country to contribute to the establishment of the VIP and ensure its success,” said Villar.
Villar added that she will ensure that returning scientists who will work in the VIP shall receive competitive compensation and incentives.
A news release from the office of the senator stated that President Ferdinand R. Marcos listed the establishment of VIP as one of his top legislative priorities.
The Bases Conversion and Development Authority has already allocated a five-hectare land at the National Government Administrative Center in New Clark City, Tarlac province for the future site of the proposed VIP.
“In the recent coronavirus pandemic, we have seen the worst and heavily challenged our medical sector.
