EU delegates visit De Lima in prison

Delegates from the European Union (EU) visited detained former senator Leila de Lima at the Philippine National Police (PNP) Custodial Center in Camp Crame on Thursday.

MANILA, Philippines — Delegates from the European Union (EU) visited detained former senator Leila de Lima at the Philippine National Police (PNP) Custodial Center in Camp Crame on Thursday.

According to the PNP’s statement on Thursday, 18 EU envoys of the European Parliament Sub-Committee on Human Rights visited the former senator as part of the Omnibus Motion filed by De Lima, as well as court orders from the Regional Trial Court Branch 256, which the Department of Foreign Affairs also endorsed.

Included in the visit were Members of the European Parliament, namely Isabel Wiseler-Lima, Karsten Lucke, Hannah Neumann, Silvia Sardone, Ryszard Czarnecki, Miguel Urban Crespo, Ana Isabel Sanchez Ruiz.

They are also joined by representatives from different political groups, including Hugo Van Der Werff, Anna Ksiazczakova, Raphael Fisera, Federico Martegani, Joanna Rejdych, Ana Vicente Moreno.

De Lima also took to Twitter to slam Sen. Bato Dela Rosa for his comments claiming that the European Parliamentary (EP) is imposing its standards on the Philippines.

“Sen. Bato, whatever standards the members of the EP delegation are trying to impose, as you say, are the standards of humanity.  We’re all part of the global community of nations that is bound by the imperatives of respect for rule of law [and] human rights,” she said.

According to De Lima, justice is not limited by national borders.

“The pursuit for truth [and] accountability cannot be confined to one’s borders. That is the very essence or reason for being of certain ground-breaking int’l instruments like the Rome Statute [and] its [International Criminal Court] mechanism,” said De Lima.

De Lima has been detained since 2017 after being implicated in the illegal drug trade, with many individuals and groups calling for her release.
