MMDA, San Juan, DTI conduct SRP compliance check in public market

MANILA, Philippines — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), the local government of San Juan City, and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) on Tuesday inspected a public market to ensure that the suggested retail prices (SRP) of basic necessities and prime commodities are being complied with.
MMDA Acting Chairman Don Artes led the inspection joined by MMDA General Manager Procopio Lipana, San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora and DTI Assistant Secretary for Consumer Protection Group Ann Claire Cabochan.
“Two notices of violation were issued against retailers at Agora Public Market due to failure to comply with the SRP,” the MMDA said in a statement.
Meanwhile, Artes, in the same statement, gave assurance that the MMDA will continue to work together with San Juan City and the DTI to ensure compliance with the SRP.
“We will coordinate with the Metro Manila Council to conduct monitoring of prices in various wet markets in the metropolis,” Artes said.
For his part, Mayor Zamora explained that the market inspection was conducted to assure consumers of protection from price irregularities.
“I want to make sure that our constituents are not being sold overpriced commodities,” Zamora said.
The inspection was also conducted after the SRP for imported red onions which was adjusted to P125 per kilogram, covering both medium and large-sized onions.
