Corona: Let’s overcome hate and division

MANILA, Philippines—Chief Justice Renato Corona reminded the Filipinos that “the powerful promise of Easter gives us the resolve to overcome hate and division and help us tread the path of peace and faith towards a society free from poverty, violence and injustice.”

In his Easter message, Corona said the persecution of Christ is a “microcosm of the modern travails our people go through in a society where the temple of justice is shaken by tectonic plates of political expediency and in a government where leaders take away the rights of others to give in to the demands of the mob.”

“The sufferings caused by such injustice by complicity, trial by publicity and conviction by popular opinion seem like dark thunderstorm clouds,” said the chief magistrate who is being tried at the impeachment court.

But in the end, he said “it will still be between us and our Creator, just like the time of the Son of Man when He called on His Heavenly Father.”

Corona reminded the people that the promise of Easter “gives us the resolve to overcome hate and division and help us tread the path of peace and faith towards a society free from poverty, violence and injustice.”

“Together, let us offer ourselves to serve God and country,” Corona said.
