MANILA, Philippines — An election officer was shot dead in Maguindanao on Monday, according to the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

Citing an initial report from the Philippine National Police (PNP), Comelec said the officer, identified as Haviv Maindan, was killed along National Highway, Purok Libas, Brgy. Pinguiaman, Lambayong, Sultan Kudarat at around 2:30 p.m.

The PNP investigation showed that Maindan was traveling with another person in a car from the municipality of Sultan sa Barongis when they were attacked.

Maindan’s companion was not wounded.

Comelec condemns killing

The Comelec condemned the killing of Maindan.

“His untimely demise left behind his wife and four children, all of whom are still in school, with the eldest in college and the youngest in elementary. They all have lost a loving husband and an ever-doting and caring father,” said Comelec

Maindan has been with the election body since 2007.

The Comelec assured the public that it is now cooperating with the PNP — which has launched pursuit operations against the assailants.
