2 quakes rock Visayas–Phivolcs

LEGAZPI CITY, Albay – Two earthquakes hit the Visayas region early Good Friday, the Philippine institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

In its website, Phivolcs said the first quake, which measured 4.5 magnitude, hit 65 kilometers northeast of Tacloban City at 4:29 a.m.

The quake, which was tectonic in origin, had a depth of 40 kilometers, Phivolcs said.

Intensity 4 was felt in Llorente and Borongan, both in Eastern Samar.

Intensity 3 was felt in Tacloban City; Mercedes, Taft, Oras, Sulat in Eastern Samar; Palo, Tolosa, Dulag all in Leyte. Intensity 2 was recorded in San Policarpio, Eastern Samar and in Leyte, Leyte, Phivolcs added.

Hours later, a mild quake, measuring 1.7 magnitude, hit 10 kilometers northwest of Guihulngan, Negros Oriental at 8:02 a.m.

The quake, which had a depth of 25 kilometers, was also of tectonic origin.

Meanwhile, no damages were reported and no aftershock is expected from both tremors, Phivolcs said.
