MANILA, Philippines — Senator Imee Marcos on Wednesday had the entire Senate in giggles when the thud of the Senate seal tumbling derailed a rather serious public hearing, and she swiftly lightened the mood with her perfect timing and incisive wit.

“Pabagsak na ang Senado (Senate is about to fall down), ouch,” Marcos quipped as the Senate seal suddenly dropped right in the middle of their deliberations on several proposed measures.

The session of the Senate’s Social Justice, Welfare, and Rural Development Committee was progressing smoothly as they discussed Senate Bills 21, 74, and 824, which all proposed amendments to Republic Act No. 10868 – otherwise known as the Centenarians Act of 2016 – and the Magna Carta for Child Development Workers or Day Care Workers.

However, the atmosphere was abruptly shaken when a deep thud suddenly echoed through the room. Miraculously, none of the officials participating in the session nor the Senate staff were hurt during the incident.

“Mabuti walang tao (it’s good that no one was there),” Senator Win Gatchalian was heard saying as Senator Robinhood Padilla checked on the Senate staff.

“Kaya nga buti na lang walang nabagsakan (Yes, it’s good nobody got hit),” said Marcos.
