MANILA, Philippines — Aklan Rep. Teodorico Haresco Jr. has filed a bill that seeks to establish a cold storage facility in every province for agricultural products and offer incentives for setting up such facilities to store farmers’ produce in and keep them fresh.

In filing House Bill No. 6978, or the proposed Food Security Cold Storage Facilities Act, Haresco said, “One of the ways to ensure food security is to have adequate storage facilities for perishable goods, such as fruits and vegetables. In order to achieve this, it is important to enact laws that require the establishment of cold storage facilities in every province of the country.”

The proposed measure will “provide incentives to private entities and local governments that will establish and operate cold storage facilities … The incentives may include tax exemptions, subsidies and other forms of financial support.”
