LEGAZPI CITY — Classes in various towns in the Bicol region were suspended on Monday, Jan. 30, amid the incessant rains brought by the shear line.

In a report, Mayflor Marie Jumamil, information officer of the Department of Education (DepEd) Bicol, said classes were suspended in Masbate province’s public and private schools in Palanas, Uson, Cataingan, and Dimasalang towns.

In Sorsogon province, classes were also suspended in Gubat, Bulusan, Juban, Casiguran, Sta. Magdalena, Magallanes, Castilla, Matnog, Barcelona, and Bulan towns.

Jumalil said the Mapaso Elementary School in Irosin town also canceled classes due to the threat of flooding.

In Sorsogon City, Mayor Ma. Ester Hamor also declared the suspension of classes at all levels.

Mark Kevin Arroco of DepEd Bicol information office said they would reschedule the National Achievement Test (NAT) in the affected areas.

He said the NAT for Grade 12 in three schools in coastal villages in Mercedes town in Camarines Norte was also canceled due to a damaged spillway.

Reports said the areas were inaccessible to the test administrators and students.

In its 8 a.m. advisory, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) Southern Luzon said Albay, Sorsogon, and Masbate were experiencing light to moderate rains.

Pagasa advised the disaster officials to monitor the weather. INQ
