Magnitude 5.0 quake rocks Sarangani

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck the province of Sarangani on Sunday just past noon, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

The epicenter of the quake was located 21 kilometers southeast of Glan, Sarangani, said Phivolcs, and was recorded at exactly 1:23 p.m.

The earthquake was tectonic in origin and had a depth of focus of 27 kilometers.

Intensity III was felt in Jose Abad Santos, and Sarangani, Davao Occidental; Glan, Sarangani; and the City of General Santos.

Meanwhile, Intensity II was felt in Don Marcelino and Malita in Davao Occidental; Alabel, Kiamba, and Malapatan in Sarangani; and Polomolok, South Cotabato.

The following Instrumental Intensities were then recorded in the following areas:

  • Intensity III – Glan, Sarangani; T’Boli, and General Santos City, South Cotabato
  • Intensity II – Talakag, Bukidnon; Don Marcelino, Davao Occidental; Malapatan, and Maitum, Sarangani; Tupi, South Cotabato
  • Intensity I – Alamada, Cotabato; Koronadal City, South Cotabato

Phivolcs said no damage should be expected, but aftershocks may occur.

4.1 quake in Davao Occidental

Meanwhile, Phivolcs also recorded a magnitude 4.1 earthquake in the waters off Balut Island.

The said quake was recorded at exactly 1:15 p.m. with its epicenter located 322 kilometers southeast of Balut Island, Davao Occidental.

It was tectonic in origin with a depth of focus of 33 kilometers and was determined to be an aftershock of the magnitude 7.0 quake which rocked offshore of Davao Occidental on Jan. 18.
