MANILA, Philippines — Three people were killed while four others, including the suspect, were injured when a grenade exploded in Cavite City, police said Thursday.
In a report sent to INQUIRER.net, the Philippine National Police (PNP) Calabarzon said the grenade blast happened late Wednesday night.
“Two groups of male teenagers were engaged in a brawl incident that transpired in Barangay 10-A, Cavite City. They were chasing and throwing stones at each other until they reached the adjacent barangay and were accosted by the responding barangay (village) officials,” police said.
A village officer or barangay tanod at the scene then saw that a member of one of the groups was holding a hand grenade with his finger inserted in the safety pin, the police added.
“The suspect threatened the responding barangay tanod that he [would] remove the safety pin and attempt to blow it up. During the fight, the suspect removed the safety pin, which resulted in the explosion of the hand grenade,” the PNP Calabarzon said.
Victims Julius Tindoc, Joseph Barrera, and Mark Gio Layug died from the blast while Reymart Patricio remains in critical condition at the Divine Grace Hospital due to injuries.
Two other injured victims, Erickson Valenzuela and Alejandro Dizon, are currently in a “stable condition” at the Philippine General Hospital.
Suspect Arjay Camacho, who was also injured from the explosion, is also in a “stable condition” at the Cavite Medical Hospital, according to police.
But his alleged cohort – a minor with the alias Daniel – was turned over to the Cavite City Social Welfare and Development Office.
