MANILA, Philippines — Defense Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. on Monday reminded military personnel that staying relevant is crucial, but it doesn’t mean the country’s armed forces should always be making waves in the news.
“We need to keep our organizations relevant at all times,” Galvez said during his speech at the Department of National Defense flag-raising ceremony. “This doesn’t mean we always have to be in the headlines.”
Galvez made the statement in light of the reported “grumblings” in the military establishment due to the Republic Act 11709.

Under RA 11709, military officials appointed to key positions will serve a fixed term of three years.
The official, however, stressed that the morale in the Armed Forces of the Philippines is now high.
“I would like to report that, as of present, the morale is now high in the Armed Forces of the Philippines during our meeting with the Philippine Army and the senior officers,” he also said in an ambush interview after the event.
