Pagasa: Rain expected in Visayas, parts of Mindanao as LPA looms

MANILA, Philippines — The trough or extension of a low-pressure area (LPA) will trigger rains in the Visayas and parts of Mindanao, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) reported on Monday.

The LPA was spotted some 495 kilometers east-southeast of Davao City at 3 a.m.

Pagasa weather specialist Obet Badrina said overcast skies, rain showers and thunderstorms due to the LPA’s trough are expected in the Visayas, Northern Mindanao, Caraga and Davao regions.

The LPA, Badrina added, has a slim chance of intensifying into a tropical cyclone.

Meanwhile, the northeast monsoon or “amihan”, will cause cloudy skies with rains over Cagayan Valley, Cordillera Administrative Region, Bicol region, Quezon, Marinduque, Romblon, and Aurora.

The rest of Luzon, including Metro Manila, will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with light rains also due to the “amihan”.

The rest of the country, meanwhile, will experience partly overcast to overcast skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms as a result of localized thunderstorms.

Pagasa also raised gale warnings over Batanes, Cagayan including Babuyan Islands, Isabela northern coast of Ilocos Norte, northern Quezon including northern and eastern coasts of Polillo Islands, Camarines Norte, northern coast of Camarines Sur, northern and eastern coasts of Catanduanes, eastern coast of Albay, eastern coast of Sorsogon, northern and eastern coasts of Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, eastern coast of Southern Leyte, Dinagat Islands, eastern coast of Surigao del Norte including Siargao and Bucas Grande Islands and Surigao del Sur
