BJMP probes strip searches of jail visitors

The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) said on Thursday it was investigating complaints that visitors of detainees in the Metro Manila District Jail Annex 4 (MMDJ-4) at Camp Bagong Diwa in Bicutan City was subjected to strip searches during their visits to loved ones. BJMP spokesperson Jail Chief Insp. Jayrex Bustinera said “if any irregularities are found to have occurred during the search process at MMDJ-4, the BJMP will not hesitate to take appropriate action against those found to be responsible.” He said searches were usual and they are supposed to follow the agency’s Operations Manual and Standard Operating Procedures as well as the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners (Mandela Rules). Bustinera said the procedures are being implemented to prevent contraband items from being smuggled inside jail facilities. —DEXTER CABALZA
