Drug suspect falls, yields P6.8 million ‘shabu’ during buy-bust in Iloilo town
MANILA, Philippines — Some P6.8 million worth of crystal meth, locally known as shabu, was confiscated from a 20-year-old suspect in Iloilo, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Thursday.
Citing a report from the Iloilo regional police, the PNP said that suspect Matthew James “Toto Mat” Bacos was arrested at a beach resort in Barangay Barosbos in the town of Carles late Wednesday night after he had sold a plastic bag of shabu to an undercover police officer.
Authorities are tagging Bacos as a high-value drug suspect.
Police said they seized from the suspect eight big transparent plastic bags and 20 heat-sealed sachets containing suspected shabu.
It also said that Bacos would be charged with violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
PNP chief Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr. said in a statement that the arrest of Bacos “is a clear demonstration of [their] commitment to fighting the illegal drug trade in the Philippines.”
“We will continue to exert all efforts to prevent, if not eradicate, drug use and encourage occasional users to discontinue use,” he added. — Niña Cuasay, trainee
