Death toll in floods climbs to 27

The NDRRMC says continuous rain due to the shear line has raised the death toll to 52 dead

The death toll from massive flooding across the country due to inclement weather since early January has climbed to 27, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said on Sunday.

Most of the fatalities were listed in Zamboanga Peninsula with eight, while seven were recorded in Northern Mindanao, six in Western Visayas, five in Bicol Region and one in Davao Region.

Eleven people were reported injured while three remained missing.

Around 112,000 people, or an estimated 31,000 families, were displaced from their homes due to flooding. A total of 614,000 people or 151,000 families from 13 regions across the country were affected by the rains and thunderstorms caused by the northeast monsoon, a shear line and a low pressure area.

Agricultural losses were estimated at P258.3 million, while damage to infrastructure was estimated at P171 million.

The government has so far extended assistance worth P31.6 million to the flood victims, the NDRRMC said. INQ
