Death toll from LPA-induced rains, floods hits 17 — NDRRMC

MANILA, Philippines — The death toll from  several low pressure areas (LPA) which triggered rains and flash floods in parts of the country has climbed to 17, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said in its situational report on Friday.

Most of the deaths were recorded in Bicol region with five.

Four deaths were reported in the  Zamboanga Peninsula and Northern Mindanao, three in Eastern Visayas and one in the Davao region.

In addition, seven persons were reported injured and two others missing.

Agricultural damage, so far, was pegged at P252.6 million and infrastructural damage at P165.7 million.

A number of low pressure areas have entered the country since January 2, bringing widespread rains in most parts of the country. 

Five municipalities have since declared a state of calamity – Tubod, Lanao del Norte; Dolores, Eastern Samar; San Miguel, Leyte; and Gandara and Basey in Samar, according to the NDRRMC.

An LPA off Surigao del Sur is expected to continue to bring overcast skies and rains to the Bicol region and the entire Visayas and Mindanao on Friday, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).
