CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — After two days of suspension, classes and work in schools of Butuan City resumed on Thursday as the intensity of rains mellowed down.
But Schools Division Superintendent Marilou Dedumo said classes would remain suspended in schools that host flood evacuees.
Up to 200 families fled their homes in Butuan at the height of the floods on Tuesday, and many returned as the weather improved on Thursday.
But on the other side of Mindanao, in the Zamboanga Peninsula, incessant rains that brought floods and landslides led to the suspension of classes.
Zamboanga Sibugay Gov. Ann Hofer and Zamboanga del Norte Gov. Rosalina Jalosjos declared class suspension on Thursday in their respective provinces, taking note of the heavy rainfall warning posted by the state weather bureau.
The mayors of 14 towns and three cities of Misamis Occidental also issued orders suspending classes at all levels.
As of Thursday noon, the local governments in Dumingag, Dinas, Molave, Ramon Magsaysay, Tambulig, Mahayag, and Sominot towns of Zamboanga del Sur ordered classes suspended for the day, as well as in Kolambugan, Linamon, Baloi, Pantar, Baroy, Kapatagan, Tangkal, Tagoloan, Pantao-Ragat, Salvador, and Lala in Lanao del Norte.
An initial report from the Office of Civil Defense in Region 9 said the rains spawned by a low-pressure area affected some 10,000 people in the region.
